Just like Proust's books, I wish I could read it all over again with fresh eyes.For anyone who loves Proust this is an absolute must – the most enjoyable book I’ve read for quite a while. Charmant et triste. I am loving this book almost as much as I loved Marcel Proust's opus. As she was genuinely fond of Proust and writes of him with love, it is at times a touching and fascinating memoir of a simple French woman who came to enjoy serving a genius. And by 'wrote' I mean that she rattled off her memories to a ghostwriter, and then the ghostwriter's book After reading The Year of Reading Proust, I remembered that I hadn't quite finished reading Celeste Albaret's Monsieur Proust. The fact that she was 80 years old should not necessarily be an issue as I have met a few folks that are still very lucid at that age i.e., long-term memory is not the issue that short-term memory is.Felt fully engrossed in this fascinating biography. She obviously was devoted to Proust and loved him, and only decided to speak after all the "lies" she was hearing about Marcel. I would have liked to know how the interviews were conducted and what questions were asked to solicit such wonderfully descriptive responses. Albaret was not a writer herself--the memoir was composed by others who shaped her oral reminiscences--but this work is beautifully shaped, and flows wonderfully.
